AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED BY JULIAN BARNES TO ROLLAND COMSTOCK; With inscribed and signed "Knopf transparency for the SATS [Staring at the Sun] cover."

[London: 1996]. First edition. Two paragraphs on Barnes' cream-colored Dartmouth Park Avenue correspondence card/letterhead measuring approximately 6.25 x 4.25" dated "10-May-96" and SIGNED BY BARNES "Best wishes, Julian B." Rolland Comstock was a noted book collector among the "gently mad" profiled by Nicholas Basbanes from Springfield, Missouri, who enjoyed flying around the country to readings, signings and lectures, where he would show up with a box or suitcase full of books to be signed, after which he oftentimes struck up regular correspondence with authors he'd met. Barnes' note reads in part, "THIS IS TO ASSUAGE THE GUILT I STILL FEEL AT ONLY BEING ABLE TO SIGN 48% OF YOUR SUITCASE." Includes hand-addressed original mailing envelope to which Comstock has loosely tipped his gift from Barnes: a color slide of the proposed dust jacket for STARING AT THE SUN (differing slightly from the eventual jacket) which is INSCRIBED AROUND ITS EDGES, "to Rolland Comstock/ a rare if trivial item/ for his collection/ from Julian Barnes." Fine.
