NEW WORLD WRITING: Seventh Mentor Selection; "A New Adventure in Modern Reading."

(New York): New American Library, (1955). First edition. Includes "Catch-18," the opening chapter of Heller's classic war novel, CATCH-22, which was not published until 1961. (Heller's agent, Candida Donadio, asked he change the title to avoid any confusion with Leon Uris's MILA 18.) Also includes "Jazz of the Beat Generation" by "Jean-Louis," from "a novel-in-progress, THE BEAT GENERATION," a working title for Kerouac's ON THE ROAD (not published until 1957). Full-color portrait of Dylan Thomas "suitable for framing" accompanies seven letters, some in facsimile, and first appearances in the U.S. of two of his short stories, "After the Fair" and "The True Story." Good or better with all but small portion of laminate peeled off but otherwise only relatively minor wear.
