THE COLLECTED POETRY OF ROBINSON JEFFERS: Five Volumes; [the complete set].

The complete set as originally issued from 1988 to 2001, each with a frontispiece photograph of Jeffers tipped in: VOLUME ONE (1988) covers Jeffers’ poetry from 1920 to 1928 with frontis photo by Ansel Adams; VOLUME TWO (1989) covers poetry from 1928 to 1938 with frontis photo by Adams; VOLUME THREE (1995) covers poetry from 1938 to 1962 with frontis photo by Leigh Wiener; VOLUME FOUR (2000) covers poetry from 1903 to 1920, prose, and unpublished writings and has a frontis photo by Wiener; VOLUME FIVE (2001) provides "Textual Evidence and Commentary" on the first four volumes and has a frontis photo of a smiling Jeffers in his later years by an unnamed photographer. The fifth volume, which was not planned until the completion of the fourth, includes a chronology of Jeffers’ career, evidence used for dating the poems, an explanation of the principles and methodology used in the series, "Textual Commentaries" detailing how the editor determined which text and punctuation to use for each poem, and various appendices and indices. This set is from the collection of Allen K. Mears, who adds “any student of poetry, publishing and printing should find this book most riveting, enlightening, and educational.” Mears has read and collected works by and about Robinson Jeffers since 1972, is a lifetime member of the Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation, a founding and lifetime member of the Robinson Jeffers Association, and was presented with the Key to Hawk Tower by the Tor House Foundation for his efforts in arranging public literary events in support of Jeffers. Each volume is small 4to (approximately 8 x 10.25”) backed in gilt-lettered reddish-brown cloth with black cloth boards with image of cypress tree stamped in blind on front; 521, 610, 485, 561, and 1128 pages, respectively, plus colophon leaf in each; book design by Adrian Wilson. Overall a near fine set with text block falling away at head of spine volume 4 and spine a bit shaken but other volumes fine and all 5 dust jackets fine. Only 1750 to 2000 copies in the first printings for each volume [Broomfield A99, A102, A114, A127, and A129]. Relatively uncommon in complete set of first printings such as this one.
