AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED "ALICE & HARPER LEE".
[Monroeville, AL: 2001]. Half-page letter on plain white 8.5 x 11" writing paper dated at head "8/16/01." Though she is not named, the letter is to a formerly ardent TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD fan who decided to rid herself of her collection after being rebuffed a few years later by the very reclusive Lee. In this particular letter, Lee declines an offer to have messages from students forwarded to her. It reads in part, "I continue to be overwhelmed with such as new students reach the 8th grade and begin to study the book." One would imagine so. Few light creases otherwise fine. Includes customs document from the package in which letter was enclosed, signed "Harper Lee" (evidently by Alice). The letter and customs document sum up nicely the protective role played by Alice later in Harper's life.
