Berkeley, CA: Editions Koch, 2005. First edition, deluxe limited issue. LETTER “A” OF 26 specially bound copies SIGNED BY BRINGHURST AND PETER KOCH (although not called for). This copy ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED BY BRINGHURST, "Alas. The colophon is in error. Even Peter [the printer and publisher]/ does not always think of everything. / This copy, hand-corrected, is for / Allen Mears, who would have / caught the error. With best / wishes, / Robert 25.II.2006." The hand-correction is an ink strikethrough of the line in the colophon reading, "The cover design is adapted from original drawings by Winifred McNeill." The book prints a sequence of 12 poems and translations based on Presocratic sources with the original Greek text or fragment used for inspiration on opposing pages. Small 4to stiff paperwraps printed in red, orange, marigold yellow, and black with the cover's design being the original Greek for the translated quotation from Aristotle appearing as an epigraph on p.4 (per Bringhurst, the original Greek was inadvertently left out of the book, hence the special cover design for the lettered edition). Designed and printed letterpress on vintage Robert Serpa handmade paper from polymer plates in the Berkeley studio of Peter Rutledge Koch; 43 pages plus colophon. Housed in original plain medium-brown paper-covered flexible card slipcase. TOGETHER WITH printouts of email correspondence between Mears, Bringhurst, and Koch in which Koch answers detailed questions about the printing and binding of the book; and a TWO-PAGE TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY BRINGHURST to Mears dated 10/10/2005 that describes the genesis of the book and its design (along with the a two-page photocopy of the type for the special covers of this edition with penciled explanatory notes by Bringhurst). Fine in fine slipcase with just a touch of faint rubbing.
