FIRST-STATE PROOF: title page indicates planned publication date of Jan. 15, 1968; printed on newsprint-like paper on rectos only without initial chapter head letters or first 15 preliminary pages (pp.[1]-xv), and with first 2 pages of chapter 6 cancels; unpaginated; crudely stapled into red card covers printed on front only. SECOND-STATE PROOF: paginated, apparently printed on same stock as published book, perfect-bound in red paperwraps with "Advance Copy/ Oyez" stamped on front. ADVANCE REVIEW COPY: white paperwraps printed in black on front only. TOGETHER WITH two Typed Letters Signed by Burton Weiss of Serendipity Books to collector Allen Mears discussing the publication sequence of the three advance volumes and pointing out that the subtitle "Essays in Tribute and Definition" used on the cover of the third volume (white covers) was not used in the published book. Text block of first volume understandably age darkened, few minor stains on rear cover of third volume, otherwise a very good to near fine set of these three pre-publication volumes.
