Waldport, Oregon: Untide Press, 1944. First edition, published in November 1944 in an edition of 975 copies. Illustrated by Kemper Nomland, Jr., and with an author's note. Measuring 6.25 x 9.5 inches, the book was handset in Goudy Light Oldstyle and Futura type and printed on Linweave Early American paper. As stated in the colophon, "War Elegies is here presented in its first published form. It was previously issued by mimeograph in 1943 as the initial publication of the Untide Press." This edition is an expanded version of that one, with additional poetry and illustrations. The illustrations by Nomland are line drawings printed in black, usually accompanied by solid or outlined box-shaped illustrations printed in still-vivid solid red. The cover is made of stiff ochre-colored paper, printed and illustrated in black and blue. The interior sheets are stapled in the gutter and glued into the wrapper. The cover has likely been reglued. The interior sheets in this copy are in very good condition with no offsetting from the illustrations. The cover wrapper is sunned on spine and with minor scuffing and offset outline on the back. It is solidly whole except for missing a small bit of the back cover lower corner. The poetry is strong and reflects the poet's pacifist philosophy. Good to very good copy of a typically fragile book.
