OUR SINGING STRENGTH: An Outline of American Poetry (1620-1930).

New York: Coward-McCann, 1929. First edition. A survey of American poetry with an entire chapter, "Shine Perishing Republic," devoted to Jeffers' work. According to Kreymborg, if Whitman closes out the first half century of American poetry, Jeffers closes out the last half and "Whitman and Jeffers afford parallels: both are prophets, both write in a grand manner, and each reflects his own period." 8vo quarter beige buckram with rust-colored cloth boards and matching spine label stamped in gilt; 645 pages including index. Near fine with small tear to lower inner hinge paper and few tiny spots to front endpaper; in somewhat soiled, good dust jacket with 3/4" chip at head of spine (not affecting any lettering).
