A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE WORKS OF ROBINSON JEFFERS; [Rare advance copy of the "larger paper" issue, SIGNED BY JEFFERS].
New York: Random House, 1933. First edition. RARE PROOF COPY of the EXTREMELY LIMITED SIGNED EDITION, reportedly being the bibliographer's own copy in his handmade box. SIGNED BY JEFFERS at foot of his introductory "Remembered Verses," p.xvi, and without Jeffers printed name on that page nor Alberts on p. ix, as described by Broomfield [Bic, p.209]. There were only 15 numbered copies in this extremely limited issue, with the last 5 intended for presentation. This out-of-series (i.e., unnumbered) proof copy consists of the unbound, sewn signatures with top edge gilt and with the tipped-in frontis portrait of Jeffers present. It’s not signed by Alberts, as called for, however one of the presentation copies (#15) was not signed by Alberts either, per Broomfield, until a later date. Housed in handmade stiff-paper folding box as acquired by the collector, Allen K. Mears, who reports the box was made by Alberts himself. Although nothing in the book or on the box specifically indicates this item was from Alberts’ personal collection, its not having been bound, its being unnumbered, and the lack of Alberts signature on p.ix, together with the statement of the previous owner, lends credence to that fact. Fine with just a hint of minor soiling to outer leaves.
