New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, (1938). First edition. Scarce advance excerpt from WIND, SAND AND STARS issued as holiday greeting. One of 1,000 copies "privately printed for the friends of the author and his publishers as a New Year's Greeting. The story is taken from the forthcoming book, 'Wind, Sand, and the Stars [sic]' to be published in the spring of 1939" (from the colophon). THE STORY APPEARS AS "THE OASIS" IN THE BOOK WITH NUMEROUS CHANGES. In the opening and closing paragraphs alone "so ubiquitous is mystery" (p.5, Wild Garden) is changed to "for mystery is everywhere" (p.114, Wind, Sand and Stars) and "And the fool leads the princess into slavery" (p.[16]) is changed to "And the imbecile carried away the princess into slavery" (p.121). Slim, small 8vo (5.375 x 7.5") black cloth backed silver-flaked light green paper boards with cream paper label on front lettered in black and bordered in green; silver-flake light green endpapers; 16 pages. Illustrations by John O'Hara Cosgrave II in light green, as are the initials and running titles. Mild rubbing to tips and light soiling to boards otherwise very good to near fine. Quite scarce.
