(New York: Mulholland Books / Little, Brown, 2013). True first edition, preceding the UK published by Canongate. SIGNED BY BOTH ABRAMS AND DORST on front endpaper at a NYC ticketed signing event, Nov. 23, 2013. Original event program included. A story within a story conceived by Abrams and executed by Dorst in which a copy of the "1949" book -- SHIP OF THESEUS -- by the mysterious "V. M. Straka," is traded back and forth between two college students trying to uncover the author's true identity (a la B. Traven). The students, "Eric" and "Jen," have an on-going conversation in the margins of the "book" without meeting. "Hand-written" notes in various colors of ink and written with two different handwriting styles fill the margins and a multitude of ephemeral items are tucked between the pages of the book: news clippings, post cards, letters, photographs, diagrams jotted on napkins, etc. 8vo gray/beige cloth lettered in black and decoratively stamped in yellow and off-white on front and spine; paper "library label" loosely affixed to spine. Housed in original dark gray card slipcase printed in light gray and black with original pictorial title label neatly opened. Original shrink wrap opened but otherwise intact. Fine as issued with illustrations mimicking "aging" and small "stains"; in fine slipcase. Truly a work of art and an homage to the printed word. Scarce signed by both men.
