VICTOR HUGO'S ORATION ON VOLTAIRE: Delivered at Paris May 30, 1878 the One-Hundredth Anniversary of His Death.

Portland, ME: Smith & Sale, 1899. First edition thus: privately printed by Smith & Sale, an Exchange Street printer known to have employed women. "Some women worked as compositors, picking type out of cases and placing it in forms. Others operated linotype machines that cast type in metal." ("Working Women of the Old Port," Maine History Online). Although not designated as such in the book, the printing was done for Hubbard "H. W." Bryant, a good friend of Thomas B. Mosher's. There are three introductions: one by James Parton, the translator; one signed "T. B. W."; and one that is unsigned. Pale olive sewn paperwraps printed in black on front; 19 pages on untrimmed handmade paper; most leaves uncut. The extremely fragile paper covers are splitting at spine fold and show few small chips and tears, otherwise near fine. Scarce.
