New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1939. First U.S. edition in a single volume. Translated from the German by H. T. Lowe-Porter. First published in Germany in 1924 and widely considered to be one of the most influential works of 20th-century German literature, MAGIC MOUNTAIN reflects Mann's experiences and impressions when his wife, who was suffering from a lung complaint, was confined to Dr Friedrich Jessen's "Waldsanatorium" in Davos, Switzerland, for several months during the outbreak of the First World War, the conflict and aftermath of which led to major revisions to this book. Near fine copy with book plate on front ened paper and only the barest wear on tips. Scarcer than one would think.
