Book Details

New York: Grove Press, (1965). First U.S. edition, published the same year in the UK. Translated from the French by Richard Seaver as "Sabine d'Estree" and with a preface, "Happiness in Slavery," by Desclos's lover, Jean Paulhan. Note on the story by Andre Pieyre de Mandiargues. An erotic novel first published in Paris in 1954 by the Olympia Press. Some 40 years after publication, Desclos -- as "Dominique Aury" -- claimed authorship and revealed the story was written as a series of letters to her lover Paulhan, to prove a woman could write like the Marquis de Sade. She certainly showed him. Black cloth boards with silver stamped spine. Small faint stain and tiny nick to fore edge of first several leaves, otherwise quite bright and fine in equally bright and fine white dust jacket. A scarce book, especially in nice condition.
