No-place: Ridgway Company, 1919-1920. First U.S. edition thus: the first appearance in the U.S. as a seven-part serialization in "Romance" magazine preceding the book publication. Preceded only by the 1919 UK serialization in "Land and Water" magazine. "Romance" was a short-lived venture edited by Arthur Sullivan Hoffman and intended as a companion to his "Adventure" pulp magazine. The seven parts appeared in the first seven issues with Part I in Vol. I, No. I, Nov. 1919. Small 4to quarter-bound vellum-like paper with yellow coated-paper boards; covers and spine unprinted; text pagination not sequential but approximately 200 pages total, plus front and rear blanks, "Publisher's Announcement," title page, and section pages for each of the 7 parts. Title page reads: THE RESCUE [double rule] BY | JOSEPH CONRAD [double rule] Serial Story Collated and Bound from | ROMANCE | November 1919, to May, 1920." Sections are paginated and with section-title pages as follows: "Part I," pp. 3-30; "Part II," pp. 157-184; "Part III," pp. 68-96; "Part IV," pp.73-102; "Part V," pp. 96-126; "Part VI," pp. 57--82; "Conclusion," pp. 145-169. Each part illustrated with vignette on first page. Altogether good or better with covers somewhat soiled and rubbed and text pages darkened with age but without any loss to the contents. Rare.
