THE ANTI-PHILISTINE: "Castigare Ridendo" Ambrose Bierce.

THE ANTI-PHILISTINE: "Castigare Ridendo".

(London: John & Horace Cowley, 1897). First edition. In the publisher's original pale-green cloth lettered in black and with illustration by Will M.Bradley stamped in red and black on front and rear covers; "Volume 1" at base of both board blacked out. Illustrated with "supplemental" photographs of contributors Gertrude Atherton, Stanley Waterloo, and Bret Harte. The short-lived magazine described by its publishers as "A Monthly Magazine & Review of Belles-Lettres [and] Also a Periodical of Protest." This volume collects the only four issues -- June through September. Includes several pieces by Bierce which, according to Starrett, previously appeared in other magazines. Also includes Eugene Field, Joaquin Miller, Francis Saltus, et al, as well as notes, reviews and opinions. Bound without the wrappers, as issued. Overall aging to covers, which are a little rubbed, corners bumped, publisher's name on spine rubbed but still just barely legible, otherwise about very good.
