London: J. and R. Tonson, The Strand, 1767. Later printing of the first volume (of two), covering Thursday March 12th to Monday June 15th. The Guardian, a short-lived newspaper published in London from March 12 to October 1, 1713, was founded by Steele and featured contributions from Addison, Thomas Tickell, Alexander Pope and Ambrose Philips. Steele and Addison had previously collaborated on The Tatler and The Spectator and are regarded as significant figures in the development of the eighteenth-century periodical. Early, full speckled-calf binding with raised spine bands, green and red leather gilt-lettered spine labels and spine and all edges elaborately tooled in gilt. Few small chips otherwise near fine.
