THE LONDON LANCET: Complete in 12 monthly issues covering the year 1850.

New York: Stringer & Townsend, 1850. First edition. The U.S. monthly version of the London weekly "Journal of British and Foreign Medical, Surgical, and Chemical Science, Criticism, Literature, and News." Two volumes-in-one with issues for January through June in "Volume I," and for July through December in "Volume II" (at the time, a new series of volumes "I" and "II" was issued each year.) Each volume followed by its own index. Relatively recently bound in 4to brown simulated leather. Over 3 inches thick and running over 1200 pages in total. Line drawings in the text and, preceding the last 6 monthly issues, full plate portraits of each physicians profiled at the beginning of that month's issue. In good solid condition with the occasional flower petal or leaf pressed between pages, general aging, soiling and wear. The publication of the Lancet was a remarkable achievement for its time. It brought together the knowledge, wisdom, and methods of physicians and surgeons in order to share and thus further the practice of medicine.
