Boston: Small, Maynard & Co., 1899. First edition. Part of the Beacon Biographies of Eminent Authors series, edited by M. A. DeWolfe Howe, this work includes the first appearance of many of Hawthorne's letters. INSCRIBED on half-title page by Fields to Elizabeth Fairchild. Annie Fields was the wife of the publisher and author, James T. Fields. She and James were friends of Hawthorne, as well as of other literary notables of their day. Intricately engraved frontispiece and title page; top edge gilt. Very good with minor rubbing to the edges, most noticeably at the spine ends and corners, still an attractive copy.
