Item #49641 THE PRESIDENTIAL PAPERS. Norman Mailer.

THE PRESIDENTIAL PAPERS.

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, (1963). First edition. INSCRIBED "To Lub / With love / - that old habit - / Norman / Nov 1963." Mailer mentions sending this copy to Lubell-Naiman in a letter printed in "Norman Mailer's Letters...." Gilt spine lettering dulled otherwise very good in like dust jacket with spine sun toned (background from blue to green and lettering from red to white). "Lub" was Adeline Lubell-Naiman, an editor instrumental in the eventual publication of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD. While at Little, Brown, in 1946, she convinced Mailer to submit the first 200 pages of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD and talked it up to her publisher. She also suggested historian and critic Bernard DeVoto read the manuscript -- but he recommended Little, Brown turn it down. (Mailer submitted it to Rinehart, who published the book in 1948.) Over the years, Lubell-Naiman and Mailer remained close friends, and in the summer of 1968, she played "Adeline McCarthy," a president of a women's college, in Mailer's film "Maidstone" (Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center website). INSCRIBED "TO LUB WITH LOVE - THAT OLD HABIT"
