Book Details

New York: Rinehart and Company, (1948). First edition of the author's first book. SIGNED on small label laid in the book. Acclaimed as one of the best to come out of WWII. A Burgess 99 title, "It remains Mailer's best, and certainly the best war novel to emerge from the United States" (Burgess). Minor wear to spine and corner edges of the cheap black paper boards, otherwise very good to fine with lettering very bright. In the scarce first-issue dust jacket with introductory blurb by Stanley Rinehart comparing Mailer favorably to Hemingway and others. Later-issue jackets with reviews are much more common. The jacket has small chips on corners and spine ends and minor edgewewar on back spine fold, but a bright copy that is still very good for this jacket which, in general, has not held up well over the years.
