This copy SIGNED by Yeats on title page where he has crossed out his printed name in ink and signed beneath it, "W B Yeats." John Millington Synge (1871- 1909) was an Irish playwright, poet, prose writer, collector of folklore, and one of the co-founders of the Abbey Theatre. He is best known for his play "The Playboy of the Western World," which caused riots during its opening run at the Abbey. He suffered from Hodgkin's disease, a form of cancer which at the time was untreatable. He died just weeks shy of his 38th birthday. Yeats says of Synge, "He was a drifting silent man full of hidden passion, and loved wild islands, because there, set out in the light of day, he saw what lay hidden in himself." Crème colored cloth spine and paper boards. Bottom on spine has a small dampstain, otherwise very good or better. SIGNED BY YEATS, THOUGH NOT CALLED FOR.
