New York: Century Co. 1891. First edition. Two volumes; 409 and 575 pages respectively, with over 200 photos and illustrations, 7 maps, 80 pages of appendixes, and an index. George Kennan's travels to Siberia resulted in his two first, and best, travel books: TENT LIFE IN SIBERIA (1870) established his reputation as a travel writer; and this work, on the exile system, provided the most detailed exposé yet of the atrocities and injustice of the czarist method for punishing political prisoners. Paper cracking at top of inner front hinge of first volume, otherwise a near fine set with the gilt top edges bright.
