Woodson, founder, in 1920, of Associated Publishers, the oldest African-American publishing company in the United States. Illustrated with photographs of Brooks throughout the ages, beginning at age 15 in 1866, just one year out of slavery. Brooks served as pastor of the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church in D.C. for over sixty years. Small dent and faint red mark on spine, otherwise very good to near fine in bright, James Amos Porter-illustrated dust jacket with matching red mark on spine, light damp staining visible on verso, few chips and a few closed tears. Porter is considered a pioneer in the field of African-American art history. He was the first scholar to provide a systematic, critical analysis of African-American artists and their works of art.
