Chicago: Stone & Kimball, 1896. First edition of author's first book, a critically acclaimed literary classic. The publisher's best seller. Green cloth boards lettered in gold on spine and covers. Very good with contemporary gift inscription on front pastedown, crack in front hinge paper (hinge still tight), and spine ends and corners showing shelf wear. Housed in slightly faded, green-cloth chemise and a BEAUTIFUL, QUARTER-LEATHER SLIPCASE, also green, with five raised spine bindes ornamented in gilt, four of the panels with gilt-tooled floral design, and the other three lettered in gilt with the title, author's name and "Chicago 1896" (slight wear, still fine). A Merle Johnson "High Spot of American Literature."
