London: Sampson Low, Marston, et al, 1891. First edition of STOKER'S FIRST NOVEL. An early copy, INSCRIBED JUST TWO DAYS AFTER PUBLICATION to "J. L. Toole / from his affectionate friend / Bram Stoker / 20.11.90." (The copyright date is 1891 but the actual date of publication was November 18, 1890.) English comic actor John Lawrence Toole was a friend of Stoker's and of Henry Irving's. It may seem unlikely now but during his lifetime Stoker was better known as Irving's personal assistant and as the business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London, which Irving owned. A testament to the friendship of the men can be found in the dedication to the first volume of Stoker's 1906 biography of Irving, PERSONAL REMINISCENCES OF HENRY IRVING, which reads "To the Memory of John Lawrence Toole Loving Comrade and True Friend of Henry Irving." SNAKE'S PASS is the only novel written by Stoker to be set in his native Ireland and is considered a clear precusor to his later works of horror, such as DRACULA. The story traces the troubled romance of traveler Arthur Severn and local peasant girl, Norah Joyce, against the backdrop of the re-telling of the legend of Saint Patrick's defeat of the King of the Snakes in Ireland. Spine faded, endpapers professionally mended at hinges and professional touch up to minor cover, altogether a very good copy which is free from foxing. Housed in a red-cloth clamshell box with gilt-lettered leather spine label. INSCRIBED TO A FRIEND JUST TWO DAYS AFTER PUBLICATION.

(Although the very mysterious Traven claimed the English versions came first, nearly all his books were first published in Germany.) THE CARRETA is the first of his "Jungle" or "Mahagony" novels, a series of six books published in the 1930's that focus on the rebellion among indigenous Mexicans forced to work clearing mahogany in labor camps in the jungle leading to the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution. Bluish gray cloth lettered in gilt on spine; top edge gray; tipped-in frontis photograph of workers making camp. Tiny crimp to one corner, thin streak of fading to spine, still near fine in first-issue dust jacket priced "7s6d" (there was a cheap edition issued with price clipped and "3/6 net" added in red). The jacket has some shallow chipping and shows age and some darkening on spine but is still good to very good and quite scarce. HIS SCARCEST BOOK, ESPECIALLY SO IN DUST JACKET.

Original printed wrappers bound in. Rosalind Perlman, born in Chicago in 1911, was educated at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and later at St. Louis Teachers College. She is the author of THE BLIND DOCTOR, a biography about Jacob Bolotin, a blind physician who lived and practiced in Chicago in the early part of the twentieth century, She and her husband established, under The National Federation of the Blind, the Dr. Jacob Bolotin Award Program, to recognize individuals and organizations working in the field of blindness that have made outstanding contributions. We assume they were contributors to the Truman campaign and had Truman sign their copy at the later date in May 1967. Magazine size, 74 pages including covers; illustrated with photographs. There are 92 plates referenced in the "List of Illustrations" but, as in some other copies of this edition, the illustration listed for page 201 is not present (there is text on that page). Pale yellow endpapers, red cloth binding ornately decorated in black and gilt, with illustrations on front and spine. Flaking to the cloth and small hole to front endpaper due to insect damage, which is too bad as it is otherwise about very good with some light soiling but gilt bright, hinges cracked but binding still tight, light foxing to endpapers, contemporary gift inscription on front endpaper, etc. A relatively attractive copy despite the wear.

Vonnegut's heartbreaking letter to his parents dated May 29, 1945, informing them he was no longer "missing in action." The letter recounts his ordeals after capture in December 1944, which included a forced march to Limberg (60 miles without water, food, or sleep), where his division was locked up without sanitation and then strafed by the Royal Air Force, killing 150; after which they were moved to a P.O.W. camp in Muhlburg to do hard labor without medical attention or clothes and little food. During a subsequent evacuation to Hellexisdorf, they were strafed by Russian planes, killing fourteen. He and several other survivors eventually stole a team and wagon and managed to get to American lines. Signed by Vonnegut with a self-portrait dated May 29, 2004. With "Kilgore Trout" drawing signed by Vonnegut bound in. A beautiful production, bound by Walt Bartholomew of Sylph Publications, Tucson, in brown Nigerian goatskin and marbled paper, with a full Record Basalt cloth slipcase. Fine. Wright was a professor and small press publisher of limited editions and, for a time, Warren's executor. The setting of the story is La Rocca, the Warrens' (and later the Cheevers') fortress house in Porto Ercole, Italy. A small book of poems designed, printed, and illustrated by Jane Daggett in the Department of Graphic Arts, School of Design at Yale. Grimshaw estimates that only about 175 copies were printed. Approximately 7 1/2 inches square; 30 pages, including 6 illustrations, bound in pictorial boards and issued without a dust jacket. Edges of spine and corners rubbed, still very good. An unknown number of these books were produced by the advertising department at the magazine and sent to agents and customers. The OCLC locates only 6 copies, so there can't have been many produced. Illustrated with photographs of store manikins White found in a department store and posed himself. Octavo batik-style paper boards; green cloth spine; light mustard-green label printed in black on front, Corners of boards rubbed, front hinge paper beginning to split, otherwise very good to near fine.
