Lilienthal February 1953 on the occasion of her husband Ted’s 60th-birthday. Theodore Max "Ted" Lilienthal was a business man, bookseller and publisher (Lantern Press) as well as one of Jeffers’ long-time friends and patrons. Contents consist of a one-page tribute to Lilienthal, Jeffers' one-page dedicatory letter to him, the first appearance of Jeffers’ 4-page poem, "De Rerum Virtute," and one page of acknowledgements. Jeffers’ poem was later collected in HUNGERFIELD AND OTHER POEMS and THE COLLECTED POETRY OF ROBINSON JEFFERS with lines formatted differently. Inscribed by Lilienthal on front endpaper the day after his birthday, "Megs/ With much love/ and thanks for making/ this beautiful book possible / 2/26/53 / TED." (Provenance: Thomas Goldwasser Books, copies of correspondence included). Folio quarter natural linen with tan-and-red decorated paper boards and gilt-stamped red spine label. Text printed in black on rectos only; gilt stamped decorations on tribute page, first page of Jeffers’ poem and acknowledgements page. A fine, clean, tight and generally bright copy of one of the most scarce and sought-after Jeffers and Grabhorn items. In publisher’s plain purple dust jacket sunned at spine and edges and with tiny hole and two small tears at center of spine but otherwise near fine.
