THE VAMPIRE. Rudyard Kipling. THE VAMPIRE.
Boston: Privately Printed, 1898. First Boston edition [Richards E1-23]. An unauthorized pamphlet featuring a poem written by Kipling to garner publicity for what would surely have been considered, at the time, a mildly pornographic painting by Philip Burne-Jones (a cousin of Kipling's) entitled "The Vampire," which was scheduled to go on display in London in April 1897. The poem became the inspiration for the 1909 Broadway play, "A Fool There Was," and 1915 film with the same title, starring Theda Bara as "the Vampire." Small, 16mo, handsewn, tan paperwraps with red vignette of bats flying under a crescent moon on front. Tipped-in frontispiece reproduction of Burne-Jones's painting, "The Vampire." Name inside front cover, few tiny, inconspicuous holes to spine fold, otherwise near fine. Quite scarce. UNAUTHORIZED PAMPHLET ILLUSTRATED WITH A MILDLY PORNOGRAPHIC PAINTING BY KIPLING'S COUSIN.
