PUBLIC WORKS: A Dangerous Trade. Robert Moses. PUBLIC WORKS: A Dangerous Trade.
New York: McGraw-Hill Book Co. (1970). First edition. INSCRIBED, "To Leyland Hayward with high regard / Robert Moses." Hayward (1902-1971) was a theatrical and Hollywood producer, most notably of "South Pacific" and "The Sound of Music." Moses, who was the subject of Robert Caro's 1974 Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, THE POWER BROKER, was known as the "master builder" of mid-20th century New York City and environs; and though Caro's biography dealt a blow to his reputation, Moses' projects were considered by many to be necessary for the region's development after the Great Depression [Wikipedia]. Large octavo, full blue pebbled-leather boards embellished in gilt on front and stamped in gilt on spine which is blocked in red; top edge gilt; marbled endpapers. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Fine in original though worn acetate which we will replace or cover with fresh mylar upon request. Also includes copies of Moses' 23-page response to Caro's book and Caro's response to Moses' response to his book.
