BURMESE DAYS. George Orwell. BURMESE DAYS.
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1934. First edition of Orwell's extremely scarce first novel in the scarce to rare dust jacket. The true first edition, published a year before the London edition. One of only 2,000 copies. Orwell told Henry Miller in 1936 that British publication was delayed "because my publisher was afraid the India Office might take steps to have it suppressed...[they]...brought out a version of it with various names etc altered, so the American edition of it is the proper one." [Fenwick p.19]. Bright and near fine to fine in the rare dust jacket showing only tanning to the spine and shallow chipping to the spine ends (touching tops of few letters) and to the upper rear panel. Fenwick A.2a. IN THE SCARCE TO RARE DUST JACKET.

ENGLAND YOUR ENGLAND; and Other Essays. George Orwell. ENGLAND YOUR ENGLAND; and Other Essays.
London: Secker & Warburg, 1953. First edition. Eleven essays, most of which make their first book appearance herein. Orwell wrote the title essay, "England Your England," as Nazi bombers flew overhead during The Blitz of 1941. Uncorrected proof in gray paperwraps printed in black on front only. Corner chipped from lower front cover corner and first few leaves bumped, otherwise very good. Scarce, if not rare in this fragile format. Housed in custom, brown cloth clamshell case with gilt-stamped leather spine label. "As I write, highly civilised human beings are flying overhead, trying to kill me."

NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR: The Facsimile of the Extant Manuscript. George Orwell, Daniel G. Siegel Peter Davison. NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR: The Facsimile of the Extant Manuscript
Weston, Mass. M & S Press, 1984. First edition thus. A folio-sized volume, bound in quarter navy-blue "Niger goat" leather over marbled boards and housed in the original cloth-covered slipcase. Number 58 of 275 copies bound as such. (An additional 55 were bound in full leather.) Over 40% of Orwell's handwritten fourth draft is reproduced in facsimile with a typescript, including corrections, on opposing pages. According to Orwell's second wife, Sonia (as quoted in the Peter Davidson's introduction), "George always threw away all his mss., letters etc, so his actual working methods are very badly docmented." And those that have survived are generally typescript, making the handwritten manuscript particularly interesting. Edited by Daniel G. Siegel. Fine in slipcase with just a touch of scuffing to one edge, still fine. UNACCOUNTABLY SCARCE.
