THE LIFE OF TIMOTHY PICKERING. Octavius Pickering, , Charles W. Upham. THE LIFE OF TIMOTHY PICKERING.
Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1867 and 1873. First edition. Complete in four volumes. The first volume by Pickering's son, Octavius published in 1867 and the rest, by Upham (a Massachusetts politician), published in 1873. Uniformly bound in original green-cloth beveled boards lettered in gilt on spine and ruled in blind on front and rear; each volume with tissue-protected, engraved frontispiece. Colonel Pickering (1745 - 1829) was the third U.S. Secretary of State--serving under both George Washington and John Adams--and his volumnous diaries, notes and letters enabled the writing of these accounts of his life, elucidating the period around the Revolutionary War, in which he served, as well as relations with the "Indians" and rural life of the time. Foxing to frontis and title pages, some staining to page edges volume I extending slightly to margins, tear in brown coated front endpaper volume II mended with archival tape, cloth at heads of spines slightly frayed with few tiny tears, otherwise very good with spine lettering bright.
