Boston: Small, Maynard & Co. 1899. First edition. Part of the Beacon Biographies of Eminent Authors series, edited by M. A. DeWolfe Howe, this work includes the first appearance of many of Hawthorne's letters. INSCRIBED on half-title page by Fields to Elizabeth Fairchild. Annie Fields was the wife of the publisher and author, James T. Fields. She and James were friends of Hawthorne, as well as of other literary notables of their day. Intricately engraved frontispiece and title page; top edge gilt. Very good with minor rubbing to the edges, most noticeably at the spine ends and corners, still an attractive copy.

New York: The Caxton Club, No-date. Nine volume set in dark green cloth with red labels on spines. One of 1,000 copies. Includes Twice Told Tales; Mosses from an Old Manse; The Scarlet Letter; The House of the Seven Gables; Grandfather's Chair; A Wonder Book; Tanglewood Tales; The Blithedale Romance and The Marble Faun. A nice, albeit plain, binding, on good paper. Minor cover wear but still very good or better. The nine volumes are numbered sequentially one through nine but as we are not familiar with this particular set of works and there is no indication of how many volumes in total, we're not sure if it's complete.
