THE FIFTH ANTIQUARIAN BOOK FAIR: A Handlist of Exhibitors Introduced by Lawrence Durrell. Lawrence Durrell, Harold Mortlake. THE FIFTH ANTIQUARIAN BOOK FAIR: A Handlist of Exhibitors Introduced by Lawrence Durrell.
(London: Antiquarian Booksellers' Association, 1962). First edition. ABA exhibitor list for book fair at the National Book League in London held June 19-23, 1962. Pale gray stapled paperwraps; 3.5 x 8.25"; 9 pages. Three-page introduction by Durrell. "I once heard a loudly-dressed man in a bookshop say: 'I want four yards of books please. They must be red and not taller than eight inches.' This happened in 1932 but I can still reemember the expression on the faces of the other customers. They stared in horror at this airy, unconcerned cad, who contented himself by swinging a cane and adding inconsequentially: 'It's for my yacht'." Light creasing to one corner otherwise fine. From the collection of the illustrator Claude Smith with his penciled signature.Typed note from the famous Charing Cross Road booksellers Harold Mortlake & Co. ("We do not know if you are interested in Lawrence Durrell ..."). IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN LAWRENCE DURRELL.

THE ALEXANDRIA QUARTET: Justine, Balthazar, Mountolive and Clea. Lawrence Durrell. THE ALEXANDRIA QUARTET: Justine, Balthazar, Mountolive and Clea.
London: Faber and Faber, (1957-60). First edition of each of the four volumes comprising his most critically acclaimed work. JUSTINE shows light foxing to page edges but is otherwise near fine in very good or better dust jacket with slight toning to spine, light soiling and tanning and tiny chips at spine tips; BALTHAZAR shows faint spotting along inner hinges but is otherwise bright and fine in very good to near fine dust jacket slightly darkened on spine and toned on edges and with few tiny corner chips; MOUNTOLIVE shows light scattered foxing to page edges and endpapers, otherwise near fine in like dust jacket with touch of rubbing, slight tanning to spine and tips nicked; CLEA shows moderate foxing to endpapers most noticeably on front pastedown but is only lightly foxed on page edges, otherwise bright and fine in near fine dust jacket with touch of light soiling and slightly sunned. Note: Ownership signature of "Harry Blackmer, Paris, 1960" on front pastesdown of CLEA. Presumably the same Blackmer in the 1932 Supreme Court decision that recognized a state's right to retain jurisdiction over its citizens abroad (Blackmer v. United States, 284 U.S. 421). Blackmer was found guilty of contempt for refusing to appear when subpoenaed as a witness for the U.S. in a criminal trial related to the Teapot Dome Scandal. Altogether a very good to near fine set. HIS MOST CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED WORK.

COLLECTED POEMS. Lawrence Durrell. COLLECTED POEMS.
London: Faber and Faber, (1960). First edition. Harry Blackmer's copy, signed on front endpaper, "Harry Blackmer/ Paris/ May '60." This presumably being the ownership signature of Colorado millionaire, Henry "Harry" Blackmer, who spent much of his life in self-imposed exile in Europe to avoid testifying in the Teapot Dome oil scandal investigation [Geneva, May 26 1962, Reuters/NY Times] after waging a losing Supreme court battle compelling him to return to the U.S. to testify [Blackmer v. United States, 284 U.S. 421 (1932)]. Near fine with light foxing to page edges and endpapers. In very good to near fine dust jacket with few small scrapes to spine lettering which is tanned and a touch of minor edge wear.
