New York: Covici Freide, (1934). First edition. Touted as "the first full-length scenario for an actual talking picture production to be published in book form." If not the first screenplay to published in book form, certainly among the very earliest. INSCRIBED TO A MAJOR BOOK COLLECTOR BY FOWLER, "To that assidious and clever collector, and my friend as well, Earle Bernheimer. Gene Fowler 1947." Bernheimer was part owner of a film company but perhaps better known as a patron of Robert Frost and for purchasing, at auction, the only copy extant of Frost's first book, TWILIGHT. Aside from the large sums he paid for important Frost items, he arranged over the years to pay Frost a kind of stipend for whatever he cared to send him from month to month -- be it drafts, proofs or wastebasket shavings. Illustrated with stills from the movie starring Wallace Beery as P.T. Barnum and featuring Adolphe Menjou.
