London: James Cochrane and M'Crone. 1834. First edition thus. Complete in eight foolscap octavo volumes, Bound by Reviere and Son in full polished green calf with gilt-titled spine labels in red and brown, gilt ornamentation and ruling to spine and board edges, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, and elaborated tooled inner dentelles. First volume with frontis portrait of Burns engraved by W. C. Edwards from an original painting by Alexander Nasmyth, and extra illustrated title page engraved by R. Brandard from a drawing by T. Stothard. The rest with frontispieces and extra title pages illustrated with vignettes engraved by Goodall, et al from landscapes by D. O. Hill "from real scenes taken by him expressly for this publication". Last volume with "Profile and Seal of Burns," and folding facsimile plate of Burns song, "The Blue-eyed Lass," in manuscript form; as well as a glossary, an appendix of "Poems in Honour of Burns," and separate indexes for the poems and songs. We note that on the "New Title Pages given with the last Volume" (as promised) "M'Crone" has been dropped from the publisher's name and replaced with "& Co.". This set with "Works of" half-title bound at front of volume 1 and ads bound at back of volumes 5 - 7. Armorial bookplate of John Randolph Harrison to front pastedown each volume. Spines and edges toned from green to brown, some scuffs and rubbing to each, minor loss at heads of spines. Altogether very good. A handsome set.
