First edition, second printing, with terminal advertisement pages numbered 1 through 6 and 8, and battered type on pages 436 and 437. One of 500 copies. There were 1,000 copies in the first printing. Parkman traveled to Fort Laramie where he joined a band of Sioux and went with them to the Black Hills and then on to the Oregon Trail. One of the classic overland narratives, and Parkman's most popular work. Listed in the Grolier 100 and Printing and the Mind of Man (514). One signature a little loose, minor foxing (primarily on first and last few pages), edges of spine and corners worn, spine a little sunned, and front hinge cracked. Still, with faults as noted, an intact copy in original cloth.
