Forster, E.M.
HOWARD'S END.
New York:
G. P. Putnam's Sons,
1910.
First U.S. edition of one of his more famous titles. "Putnam's, without the author's approval, supplied titles to all the chapters and made alterations to the text. As a result of his objections, the chapter titles and chapter running heads were deleted" (Kirkpatrick A.4.b). There were 1,500 copies total, this is the second issue with the title added to the front cover and three pages of ads at rear, versus two pages. Kirkpatrick noted in 1985 that this first U. S. edition was scarce, with only two libraries, the Library of Congress and the Bodleian Library, having copies of both issues. Spine lettering faded but still readable, corners and spine ends rubbed, and front endpaper missing, otherwise very good.
